On Friday (5), Gleisi Hoffmann, the national president of the PT, expressed her congratulations to Keir Starmer on his majority win over former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in the UK elections. The centre-left Labour Party secured 412 seats compared to the Conservatives’ 120.
Hoffmann took to social media to share her views on the election results, stating that they reflect a sense of frustration in the UK following 14 years of conservative and liberal governments. She pointed out that Labour’s victory sends a strong message against the rise of extreme right-wing politics globally.
In her statement, Hoffmann criticized conservative and neoliberal policies in the UK, highlighting their negative impact on public health and education services, housing access, income levels, employment opportunities, and credit distribution. She also emphasized how these measures have exacerbated income inequality by favoring the wealthy while neglecting the needs of the less fortunate.
Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) also extended his congratulations to Starmer, wishing him a successful term and emphasizing the importance of diplomatic relations between their countries. Lula had previously met Starmer in Dubai during COP28.
The recognition of Starmer’s victory and its implications for UK politics reflects a wider global context of political shifts towards center-left ideologies. The Labour Party’s success in the UK elections signifies a change in public sentiment and a desire for progressive policies focused on equality and social welfare.
