In Bowling Green, Kentucky, a new small business has opened its doors – Sweaty Glass. Owned by Shane Spickard, the studio specializes in the art of glass blowing and is the second of its kind in the state.
Spickard’s passion for glass blowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. He fell in love with the art form and has been honing his skills ever since 2019. Now, he has transformed a garage into his very own glass-making factory where he creates beautiful glass cups, vases, and other decorations using melted glass. In addition to creating stunning pieces himself, Spickard also teaches classes for those interested in learning the art of glass blowing.
The process of creating these mesmerizing glass pieces is intricate and involves several steps. Spickard first heats the glass until it reaches a malleable state. He then adds colorful glass frit to create unique designs before sculpting the piece using various tools. To shape the vase, Spickard even uses wet newspaper! After smoothing out the piece with a torch, it is placed in a stove for 12 hours to cool and harden.
Sweaty Glass can be found at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and offers classes for anyone looking to learn this fascinating art form. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, Spickard’s classes are sure to inspire you to create your own beautiful works of art using melted glass.
