On May 26, 2024, Brazil was announced as the host of the women’s World Cup in 2027. This marks the first time that the tournament will be held in South America. The country has previous experience hosting major sporting events, including the Pan-American Games in 2007, the Olympic Games in 2016, and the Copa America in 2019 and 2021.
The Brazilian candidacy for the women’s World Cup emphasized that the country already has the necessary infrastructure in place to host the tournament. This infrastructure was developed in preparation for the 2014 World Cup, which was organized during one of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s terms as Brazilian president. Additionally, Brazil’s women’s football championship, established in 2017, is part of the legacy program from the 2014 World Cup.
Julia Costa, director of women’s football promotion within the Sports Ministry, stated that hosting the 2027 women’s World Cup presents a unique opportunity to promote gender equality in sport. Unlike the men’s World Cup, which is one of the most-watched sporting competitions globally, the women’s tournament does not generate as much revenue. However, Costa believes that this presents an opportunity to showcase female athletes and promote gender equality in sport.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) estimates that investments in temporary structures for the 2027 tournament will total USD $13 million. This is significantly less than what was spent on temporary structures for
